From TLC: SSL ERROR ON SIS SERVER

The SSL certificate is set to expire on the SIS server tonight at midnight.  In the morning when you access SIS via a web browser you will receive the following message:

You do not have to worry about this error, simply select "Continue to this website (not recommended)" to connect to the SIS server.  The new SSL certificate will be installed over the weekend when we have some routine maintenance scheduled on the SIS web server.  Until the new SSL certificate is installed, you will receive the above message.  Consequently, the SIS server will be unavailable Sunday morning between the hours of 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM as we perform the scheduled maintenance and update the SSL certificate.  Thank you.

Bring your students into the WGCloud

If you are ready to bring your students into the cloud then just watch this video tutorial on how to get your students logged in for the first time. The video is design to be followed through step by step with your students. It is crucial that they enter in their new password correctly, so please make sure they stick to the format. (please note the video also goes on to show you how your students can add their new email address to their Edline accounts for further usage of the communication tools offered in Edline)

The WGCloud serves as a great multi use tool. At a minimum level it acts as a great place for students to store and back up any work they might be working on in your class. Unlike the student server, students can access their work at home and continue to work on something they started in class.

The WgCloud offers many other services, such as student email, online collaboration, automatic saving, student YouTube channels (great for storing or presenting from) and much more.

If you'd like to learn more about how this tool can be a benefit to you, your students, and your file management  please let me know.

Please note: After students have setup their accounts their email address are: username@wgcloud.org

Edline.net Hixson Training session

Before one can get started in Edline/Black Board Engage they must activate their account. To do so, you will need to get your activation code from the Digital Briefcase on the Hixson Network.

Once you have your activation code you can then go to Edline.net and click the "sign up" link

You can follow along with this video to learn how to activate your account: Click here to view the video.

We are recommending that you use your username and password for the screen name and password, but please note that you can only use letters and numbers for your screen name, no punctuation or spaces.

Once you have gone through the training you will be able to associate students to your class. Below is a video tutorial on how to do this. If you've already gone through the summer training session then you can start by viewing this and start associating students to your class room site.:

iPods in the building

The Hixson tech department has recently acquired iPod touches for building use. The main purpose for this purchase was to continue to add to our video equipment arsenal.

In the past Flip cameras did the trick, and the company was doing well, then Kodak came out with some clever little cameras which were an improvement to the Flip. Unfortunately both companies have gone bankrupt. The primary reason being the increase in quality of phone cameras and the increase in number of people with these devices.

Back to the iPods, now available for check out...

Our new devices both act as a camera, a video camera, a portable audio recording station, and what ever ones imagination can create. If you have a specific need for an iPod touch, they are only a Tech Req away. If you request for video recording equipment you may get one of these new pieces of equipment due to the others being checked out.

If you'd like to check out what apps we currently have available check in with our local librarian media specialist, JoAnne Williams, or stop on by the media center and take a look at one of the devices.

Any app that is available free to download is also only a tech req away.

Take a look:

Team Laptop Wireless Connection

Please schedule a time for the tech department to come to your classes this week to connect the computers to the new wireless network ( this will be on a first come first serve basis) The list as times this week are filled up will be posted here.
Please choose a time where your team or your students can get out all of the computers on your team and turn them on, the tech department will then come around and connect them to the wireless network. This process, should only take about 15 minutes if the above steps are followed.

Please note: We are not available between 11:00- and 12:00 this week

No wireless Internet on March 16

On March 16th, TLC will be splitting our wireless network (George) into 2 broadcasting networks, which means limited to no wireless access on the 16th of March.

The details: The wireless networks that will exist will be George(which will be available for our networked district equipment) and WebNet (available for all other devices)

This split will help to free bandwidth use for district employees as well as secure our wireless network.

WebNet password will be available at the date of the launch, March 16.

Please plan accordingly as we will be able to reconnect every computer to the new wireless on that day. Our goal is to have every district device reconnected by the end of the week we return from spring break.

If you leave your teaching laptop hard wired into the Internet on the 15th overnight, there is an 80% chance that a script that TLC is pushing out will auto connect your computer over to the new wireless without issue.

Website Awareness month

This month I am hoping to bring awareness about Websites, in particular, your websites.

It's a great time to take a look at them as well as brain storm on how to update, modify, morph, use, share, them.

In order to do this I will be posting short web tutorials here on how to make simple changes to your site, and navigate through some of the features that school center has to offer. Also, during this month, starting on the week of February 6th, we will offer time and assistance in the media center for Web Wednesday. That means, every Wednesday, all day long in the month of February starting next week, we will have people to help answer your questions, brainstorm ideas, talk about, your website!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.  See you Wednesdays!
